Carriage driving courses

If you're getting too stiff for horse riding but still want the thrill, if you're nervous of riding but like the idea of horses, then carriage driving could be for you. At the New Forest Lodge we have a six seat four wheel Jardinera carriage, a two wheel trotting rig, a four wheel marathon carriage (a rugged cross country vehicle), all with modern disc breaks, and a selection of traditional restored gypsy and farm carts.

This is an opportunity to learn or develop the skill of carriage driving. Start with a tour of the farm from the carriage before perfecting your skills in our outdoor school with our well schooled carriage horses. Have a go at the art of long reining, harness fitting and putting to.

The itinerary will depend upon the drivers abilities and many other factors, and we will do our best to taylor each days driving to suit your particular needs and preferences. Novices will start on our own farm trails and with more experience we will venture out on the local dirt roads were you will very rarely see any motor vehicles. There are hundreds of miles of good dirt tracks with incredible views over Cape St. Vincent and the Atlantic beaches. We sometimes visit quiet country villages were we may stop for lunch at other times we may enjoy a BBQ lunch at our farm or a picnic near the beach or up in the hills.

We start after a leisurely breakfast and after 2 or 3 hours driving will stop for a substantial lunch or picnic. Then continue riding into the afternoon taking several rest stops for both the horses and ourselves, refreshments will be provided.

Courses need not nesseseraly be taken on consecutive days, you may wish to spread your days to give time off for the beach, etc.

Cost per participant:

  • non residential 3 day course €285
